After 5.5 years I cancelled my gym membership.
I’ve shared on social media often my love for going to the gym. Less than a year ago I made a post on Instagram justifying the monthly cost, even while I claim to be a frugal person.
But you know what? Seasons change. And we have to be okay with it.
The season where a gym membership was super beneficial for me started when my baby was a year old. I chose this particular gym because they offered childcare. It was more expensive, and farther away from home, but 3-4 days a week it gave me some much needed alone time to refresh my body and my mind.
After covid, my favorite class was never offered during the day again. Then when my youngest started going to school, I found myself choosing to run other errands or spending that 2-3 hours doing things at home instead.
Seasons change.
I started feeling guilty about spending $100 a month and only going once or twice, even though I still loved how I felt after being there.
And so I finally got real with myself. It’s okay to say no and move on.
(Though they made it really difficult to say no… I had to physically go in and talk to someone in person in order to cancel. Terrifying for this people-pleasing #enneagram9. 🙈 But I stood my ground.)
Do I still need to get in shape? Gosh yes. I easily have 50 lbs to lose, and I get out of breath and sore easily.
But for now, this is no longer a season for me to spend money on a gym membership. Though that season could very well come back around someday!
This season I’m focusing on lots of disc golf with my husband, after-dinner walks, and regular Pilates.
What sorts of physical activity are part of your current season of life?
