Do you have a “last 90 days” goal?
I’ve seen this idea floating around, as we hit October 1 and have three months left of 2019. Finish strong, go out with a bang, complete a task you’ve been avoiding this year.
Maybe it’s to lose a few pounds (or not gain any during the holidays). Maybe it’s to read through the whole New Testament, or 10 fiction books. Maybe it’s to set your phone down more frequently.
Goals are great, and they’re even better when you have a set time frame to accomplish them. But whatever your goal is, you’re much more likely to achieve it when you ask a question along with it:
Why?
Why do you want to accomplish this goal? Is it a vague “because I’m supposed to” or “because it would be good for me” answer? Or can you identify something more concrete?
I want to lose weight because yes, it’s good for my body, but also because I want to be able to keep up with my kids when they ask to run and play outside. I want to be able to swing my grandbabies over my head someday, or walk up the stairs and not be out of breath.
I want to read 10 books because yes, reading is fun, but also because I know it’s important to take time for myself and rest for a few minutes each day so that I can be a better mom.
When you identify your why, it’s much easier to fight the temptation to let your goal slide. If you have a concrete picture in your mind of why you’ve chosen to push yourself, it will motivate you when the going gets tough.
My last-90-days goal? I feel like a broken record at this point, but it’s to write daily. Often here in this space (yay Write31Days) and on Instagram, but even if I don’t get a post up publicly each day, I want to write. It could also be in my journal, or a few paragraphs in a project I’m working on.
A great goal right? But it will be easy to slip up if I don’t name my why.
I want to write daily, BECAUSE it will both stretch my creative brain (helping other areas of my life), and will (hopefully!) encourage other people in their days. And that is something I can remind myself of when I’m tempted to sleep in or scroll my phone instead.
Do you have a last-90-days goal? What is your why?

This is a great post! I do have some goals but I haven’t really articulated the “why” behind them and I can see how being really clear about that would be helpful and would keep me going when it’s hard. Thanks for sharing this great advice!

Wonderful post. I have been thinking a lot about my why as well. I don’t have a 90 day goal. I like how it sounds and may have to dig around and learn more. Have a beautiful day. Visiting also from 31 Days of Free Writes. I also saw your profile mentioned Michigan’s four seasons. I am a fairly new resident of Michigan. Nice to see someone from here. 🙂
