“You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown, where feet may fail…”
Music is such a big part of my life and the life of my family, and often when prompted with a single word (like for Five Minute Friday), the first thing that comes to mind is a song. This one in particular isn’t too surprising, as we’re considering playing it in church on Sunday, so it had already been on my mind the last few days. God works in cool ways doesn’t he?
This Michigan girl has only ever seen the ocean four times in my life. 1) A college trip to Panama Beach, Florida. 2) A week-long getaway with my husband to Washington and Vancouver. 3) A flight over the Atlantic to Europe with my husband, father-in-law, and sister-in-law. 4) An extended-family vacation to the Caribbean.
It’s actually been exactly 10 years since that Europe trip — today is the day we flew home after two weeks of exploring Canada, Norway, and the Netherlands.
There are so many beautiful places in the world, but many of them take long hours of travel to get to.
That’s a deeper lesson I could run with, but I only have five minutes. 🙂 I’ll ponder this some more today, and maybe you can too: I can imagine some beautiful places I want to go – figuratively – in my life, but it’s going to take some work and stepping out across vast, unknown water to get there.
Five Minute Friday is a weekly opportunity to simply write about one word for five minutes flat, and link-up what you’ve written, to connect with other writers.

Ms. Roer, Hey there! I’m your FMF neighbor today. I love that you are a mom of three girls! Total opposite gender household here. I am the mom to our 2 boys. They love the ocean, and we do too. I’ve been to the ocean countless times as a native Floridian. However, your post reminds me of what a gift that time at the ocean is. I know there are some in the USA and other countries that have not nor will ever see the ocean. Those land locked places or those who are not able to travel physically or with the means to do so.
I loved this prompt as it gave me a chance to weed through my photos and stock photos to show the glorious wonders of God’s creation. I did an old song: Pslam 148. 🙂 I love church music too so I love your take on this word too. Confession this one took me longer than 5 minutes to highlight the text and find photos to match. Love these little link ups because it keys me into other faith filled bloggers.
Hope your weekend is good, and your music at church fills you with oceans of God’s joy, peace, and love,
JKC

I’ve never seen the ocean…. Would be neat to do so.

“Oceans” is what came to my mind right away, too. I love that song – we played it at my ordination during communion. What power and mystery. Thank you for reflections and may we go where the Spirit leads us. FMF12

This song came to my mind right away too, but I dismissed it. I love it. I have it’s lyrics displayed on my wall and sing it daily… Terrifyingly brave words!
I have to ask, because I’m here too, where in Michigan are you?
Carrie Roer says
I’m in a little town called Belding, about 30 minutes northeast of Grand Rapids. How about you?

The closer I get to dying, the more I agree with this –
