PRAISE: the act of expressing approval or admiration; commendation; laudation. (dictionary.com)
Praise the Lord, my soul, all my inmost being praise his holy name.
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.
A psalm is simply a sacred song or hymn. In the Bible, the book of Psalms is a collection of songs spanning multiple authors and multiple times and stories. I read through the Bible chronologically once, and loved how the reading plan scattered the Psalms across where they fit with other events (Moses, David, the exile, etc).
A quick search shows the word “praise” appears 363 times in the Bible, 182 of which are in Psalms.
It’s no wonder we sometimes call our music in church “praise and worship”.
But even if you have no musical ability and can’t carry a tune in a bucket, you can praise. Expressing admiration for what God has done is not limited to songs.
The last psalm in the Bible mentions lots of instruments, but I love verse 6.
1 Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. I’m assuming you have breath, because if you are alive and reading this, you’re likely breathing. 🙂 Use your breath and your words today to express approval and admiration for something God has done or created. Maybe share in the comments below?

Linda Hoye says
So many reminders in scripture to praise, so many reminders in nature to offer praise to the Creator of it all. And even when it seems dark—there’s still reason to praise! Forever and always!

I’m breathing, but it’s hard. On top of pancreatic cancer I have non-Hodgkins lymphoma,and my chest just plain hurts with each breath.
Nonetheless, the shortness of time ahead makes me appreciate the moments of blessing all the more, and I am happier than I have ever been in my life.
